A pounds to tons calculator divides pounds by 2,000. The formula is US tons = pounds ÷ 2,000.

Worked examples
Example 1 is a pile of delivered stone that weighed 5,000 lb on the ticket.
- US tons: 5,000 ÷ 2,000 = 2.500
- Metric tonnes: 5,000 × 0.000453592 = 2.268
- Kilograms: 5,000 × 0.453592 = 2,268.0
Example 2 is a loaded flatbed carrying 18,500 lb of block.
- US tons: 18,500 ÷ 2,000 = 9.250
- Metric tonnes: 18,500 × 0.000453592 = 8.391
- Kilograms: 18,500 × 0.453592 = 8,391.5
The kilograms and tonnes are handy when a trailer, hoist or crane lists its limit in metric.
Example 3 is a trailer job. A driveway needs 12 tons of stone, and your trailer is rated for a 7,000 lb payload.
- Payload in tons: 7,000 ÷ 2,000 = 3.5 tons per trip
- Trips: 12 ÷ 3.5 = 3.43, so 4 trips
- Weight per trip if you split evenly: 12 ÷ 4 = 3 tons, or 6,000 lb
Four trips at 6,000 lb leave a margin under the 7,000 lb rating. Check the rating on your own trailer and tow vehicle before you load them.

How to read a weight ticket
- Find the gross weight, which is truck plus load.
- Find the tare weight, which is the empty truck. The net weight is gross minus tare.
- Use the net weight in pounds and divide by 2,000 to find the tons you were sold.
- Check that the ticket and the invoice agree. If they use different units, convert before you compare.
Common mistakes
- Dividing by 1,000 or by 2,204.6 and calling it tons. 1,000 is for kilograms to tonnes, and 2,204.6 is for pounds to metric tonnes.
- Mixing short tons and metric tonnes in one calculation. A 10 percent error is easy to miss.
- Using the weight of dry material for wet. Wet sand and gravel weigh more than dry, sometimes by hundreds of pounds per cubic yard.
- Rounding too early. 2.268 tonnes and 2.3 tonnes are not the same on a heavy lift.
- Ignoring the weight of the container or truck bed when you are loading a trailer. A payload limit is separate from the gross limit.
