Are these calculators a substitute for a structural engineer?

No. They apply standard, published mechanics formulas — the same equations in any statics or mechanics-of-materials textbook — so you can check a number or understand a concept. Anything load-bearing or safety-critical (an actual beam, connection, or foundation) needs a licensed structural engineer's sign-off, not a website calculator.

Why do some calculators ask for E and I instead of just a beam size?

Modulus of elasticity (E) and moment of inertia (I) are properties of a beam's material and cross-section, not something a formula can guess. Real span/size tables come from code bodies (AWC, AISC) testing specific products — we don't have a verified copy of those tables, so we ask for the engineering properties directly and compute from first principles instead of publishing a possibly-wrong lookup value.

What is deflection-governed span?

Most codes cap how much a beam is allowed to sag under load — often span ÷ 360 for a floor. Our span calculators solve the deflection formula backward to find the longest span that stays under that limit. The actual code-approved span can be shorter if the beam's bending strength (not just stiffness) governs — always confirm with a span table or engineer before building.
