Asphalt & Paving Calculators

Asphalt and paving calculators convert driveway and patch dimensions directly into tonnage and installed cost.

Frequently asked questions

Why is asphalt calculated in tons instead of cubic yards?

Hot-mix asphalt is batched, sold, and delivered strictly by weight. Our asphalt calculators convert your dimensions to tons directly using the standard 145 lbs per cubic foot density of compacted hot mix.

How thick should asphalt be for a driveway?

Residential driveways typically use 2-3 inches of compacted asphalt over a 4-6 inch gravel base. Commercial lots and heavy-vehicle areas go 3-4 inches or use two lifts.

Can I order a small amount of asphalt for a patch?

Many plants have minimum orders of 1-2 tons for hot mix, and it must be placed while hot. For repairs smaller than that, cold-patch material in bags is the practical option even though it costs more per pound.
