Gravel & Aggregate Calculators

Gravel and aggregate calculators size driveways, drainage beds, and base layers by cubic yard and ton, covering gravel, pea gravel, crushed stone, and more.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between gravel, crushed stone, and crusher run?

Gravel is a general term for loose rock; crushed stone is angular machine-crushed rock that locks together; crusher run includes stone dust ("fines") that compacts into a dense, firm base — which is why it weighs more per cubic yard (about 1.5 tons vs 1.35-1.4 for the others).

Why is gravel sold by the ton but measured by the yard?

You measure your project by volume (length × width × depth), but suppliers weigh trucks at the quarry scale. Every calculator in this category does the conversion for you using each material's typical density.

How deep should a gravel layer be?

Decorative and walkway layers: 2-3 inches. Driveways: 4-6 inches of surface gravel, ideally over a compacted crusher-run base. Drainage applications like French drains typically use 3-4 inches around the pipe.
