Why report volume in four units?
Because you buy different things in different units. Concrete and aggregate come by the cubic yard, water and fuel by the gallon or liter, and dimensional work in cubic feet. Getting all four at once means no second conversion step.
Which shape calculator do I use for a pile of gravel?
A dumped pile is a cone, so use the cone volume calculator (or the dedicated Stockpile Volume Calculator, which also converts to tons). A tank is usually a cylinder; a hopper or tapered pile is a frustum.
Are the formulas exact?
The geometry is exact for a perfect shape. Real-world objects are approximate — a pile is never a perfect cone, a pond is never a perfect box — so treat the result as a close estimate and round up when ordering material.
