Frequently asked questions
How far apart should fence posts be?
Eight feet is standard for wood and vinyl panel fencing, matching common panel widths. Chain link tolerates up to 10 feet. Never exceed your panel or rail length, and tighten spacing in high-wind areas.
How deep should fence posts be set?
One-third of the post above-ground height, with a 2-foot minimum — so a 6-ft fence needs posts about 2 ft deep, below the local frost line, typically set in 2-3 bags of concrete each.
How do I count posts for a fence with a gate?
Count the perimeter posts first (our calculator does this), then note that gates need their own posts — usually heavier-duty and set deeper than line posts. A single gate uses two of the posts in your count but upgrades both.
