Frequently asked questions
What is a roofing "square"?
One square = 100 square feet of roof surface. Shingles are sold in bundles sized so three bundles cover one square — which is why our shingle calculator works in bundles of roughly 33 square feet each.
Is roof area the same as my house footprint?
No — pitch adds surface area. A roof at a 6/12 pitch has about 12% more surface than the footprint below it; steeper roofs add more. Measure the actual roof planes, or apply a pitch multiplier to the footprint.
How much extra should I order for a roofing job?
Ten percent covers ridge caps, starter courses, valley overlaps, and cutting waste on a straightforward gable roof. Hips, dormers, and complex rooflines push waste toward 15%.
