A square feet to square meters calculator multiplies an area in square feet by 0.092903. The factor comes from the length conversion: one foot is 0.3048 meters, and an area multiplies two lengths, so one square foot is 0.3048 × 0.3048 = 0.092903 square meters.

A mental shortcut

A square meter is a bit bigger than ten square feet, because 1 sq m = 10.764 sq ft. So to estimate square meters, divide square feet by 10 and take off about 7%. For 1,000 sq ft: 1,000 ÷ 10 = 100, and 7% of 100 is 7, which gives 93. The exact answer is 92.90. This is close enough for a quick check, and the calculator handles the rest.

Doing it by hand

Multiply by 0.092903 on any calculator. If you only have a basic calculator, 0.093 is close enough for a rough figure. The error is under 0.1%, so 1,000 sq ft gives 93 instead of 92.9. For material orders, use the full factor and then add an allowance for waste.

How to measure the area first

For a rectangle, multiply length by width in feet. For an L shape, split it into two rectangles and add. For a triangle, multiply the base by the height and divide by 2. Working with a mixed list

If your plans mix units, convert everything to one before you add. Say a floor plan lists rooms of 250 sq ft, 120 sq ft, and 85 sq ft. Add them first: 455 sq ft. Then convert once: 455 × 0.092903 = 42.27 sq m. Converting each room and adding the rounded results can drift by a hundredth or two. That is harmless for a rough budget, but it adds up on a large building, so convert the total.

Suppliers in metric countries often sell in box sizes that cover a set number of square meters, so divide the converted area by the box coverage and round up.
