How this calculator works
Installed fence cost is material plus labor per linear foot of fence. The calculator multiplies your total run by each rate and splits the totals.
Formula: Total = fence length × material rate + fence length × labor rate.
Worked example
A 100-foot fence, $12/ft material, $13/ft labor:
- Material: 100 × $12 = $1,200
- Labor: 100 × $13 = $1,300
- Total installed: $2,500

How much does a fence cost per foot?
Installed fencing is usually priced per linear foot: chain link $10–20, wood privacy $20–40, vinyl $25–45. The calculator defaults to $12 material and $13 labor per foot (a mid-range wood fence); enter your local rates and style.
Why price fencing by the foot?
Fence cost scales with length, not area — posts, rails, pickets, and labor all repeat along the run. Measure the total run in feet and the per-foot rate gives the job cost directly.
Does this include gates?
No — gates are priced separately because they need heavier posts and hardware. A single walk gate typically adds $150–400, a double drive gate more. Add gates as a separate line.
What raises fence cost?
Taller fences, premium materials, sloped or rocky ground (harder post holes), and tear-out of an old fence all add. Corners and gates also cost more than straight runs.
