House Repiping Cost Calculator

Estimate the cost to repipe a house's plumbing from its footprint and your material and labor rates per square foot.

Area = length x width. Coverage tells you how much house repiping cost that area needs.

How this calculator works

This calculator estimates the cost to repipe a house’s plumbing based on the home’s footprint. You enter the house’s length and width, and it multiplies that area by a material rate and a labor rate, both priced per square foot, to get a total.

Formula: Total cost = house area (length × width) × material rate per sq ft + house area × labor rate per sq ft.

Worked example

A 20 ft × 40 ft footprint, $3/sq ft material, $4/sq ft labor:

  • House area: 20 × 40 = 800 sq ft
  • Material cost: 800 × $3 = $2,400
  • Labor cost: 800 × $4 = $3,200
  • Total estimated cost: $5,600

Notes

Repiping cost scales with the number of fixtures and stories more than raw footprint. A house with more bathrooms, a kitchen, and a laundry room has more pipe runs and connection points to replace than a similarly sized house with fewer fixtures, so the per-square-foot rate you use should account for your home’s fixture count.

PEX repiping is typically cheaper and faster to install than copper, because it needs fewer joints and can snake through walls rather than requiring as much cutting and soldering. If your quote is for copper instead of PEX, expect the material and labor rates to run higher than the defaults here.

How to use

Measure your house’s footprint (length times width) and enter local material and labor rates per square foot from a plumber’s quote. Adjust the rates up if your home has more fixtures, more stories, or copper pipe instead of PEX, since those factors raise cost beyond what footprint alone captures.

Frequently asked questions

What does this repiping estimate include?

It covers material and labor priced per square foot of house footprint, giving a rough total for replacing the home's water supply lines. It doesn't include drywall patching, fixture replacement, or permit fees, which are typically quoted separately by a plumber.

Does repiping cost scale with square footage alone?

Square footage is a useful starting point, but the number of bathrooms, kitchens, and stories in the house matters more to the actual bill. A single-story house with two bathrooms and a two-story house with the same footprint but three bathrooms will cost differently to repipe, even though this calculator treats them the same.

Is PEX cheaper than copper for repiping?

Yes, PEX repiping is typically cheaper and faster to install than copper. PEX needs fewer joints and can snake through walls and framing without as much cutting, which lowers labor time compared to rigid copper pipe runs.

Should I repipe the whole house at once?

Whole-house repiping is disruptive but often more cost-effective per foot of pipe than repiping room by room over time, since the plumber is already mobilized and walls are already open. This calculator assumes a full-house job based on total footprint.
