Tile Shower Cost Calculator

Estimate the cost to tile a shower's walls from their combined area and your material and labor rates per square foot.

Area = length x width. Coverage tells you how much tile shower cost that area needs.

How this calculator works

This calculator estimates the cost to tile a shower’s walls. It takes the combined wall area — width times height — and multiplies it by a material rate per square foot and a labor rate per square foot, then adds the two together. Shower tile work is more detailed than open floor tiling, so the labor rate you enter should reflect that.

Formula: Total cost = shower wall area (width × height) × material rate per sq ft + same area × labor rate per sq ft.

Worked example

A shower with 5 ft of combined wall width and 7 ft height (35 sq ft), $6/sq ft material, $12/sq ft labor:

  • Area: 5 × 7 = 35 sq ft
  • Material cost: 35 × $6 = $210
  • Labor cost: 35 × $12 = $420
  • Total estimated cost: $630

Notes

Shower tile labor costs more per square foot than floor tile because it’s a smaller, more detailed wet-area job — waterproofing, niches, and corner work all add time that a flat, open floor doesn’t require. A curbless shower or a custom shower pan adds cost on top of the wall tile alone, since those are separate materials and labor steps.

How to use

Measure the combined width of the shower walls you’re tiling and the wall height, both in feet, and enter your expected material and labor rates per square foot. The calculator multiplies the area by each rate and adds them together for a total estimated cost.

Estimates only. Actual cost depends on your region, tile size, and shower complexity (niches, benches, pan type) — get a contractor quote before budgeting.

Frequently asked questions

What area do I enter for a shower tile cost estimate?

Enter the combined width of the shower walls you're tiling multiplied by the wall height, both in feet. If the shower has multiple walls of different widths, add their widths together before entering the combined width, since the calculator treats it as one continuous tiled area.

What's included in this shower tile cost estimate?

Material (wall area times your material rate per square foot) and labor (the same area times your labor rate per square foot). It doesn't include the shower pan, plumbing fixtures, glass enclosure, or waterproofing membrane materials — those are separate line items.

Why does shower tile cost more per square foot than floor tile?

A shower is a small, detail-heavy wet area — labor includes waterproofing, cutting around niches and corners, and working in a tight space, all of which take more time per square foot than an open floor. That's why shower labor rates typically run higher than floor tile labor rates.

Does this calculator account for niches or a bench?

No — it only estimates cost for the flat wall area you enter. A built-in niche, bench, or curbless pan adds material and labor beyond the basic wall area, so you should account for those separately or ask your contractor to quote them as add-ons to this estimate.
