Topsoil Delivery Cost Calculator
Buy Topsoil Delivery Cost at Home Depot →How this calculator works
This combines material cost (cubic yards of topsoil, from the standard volume formula, times your price per cubic yard) with a labor cost (your bed or lawn area times a per-square-foot spreading/grading rate). Both price fields are editable placeholders — use your supplier’s actual quote for a precise estimate.
Formula: Cubic yards = (Length ft × Width ft × Depth ft) ÷ 27. Total cost = (Cubic yards × Price/yd³) + (Area sq ft × Labor rate/sq ft).
Worked example
A 20 ft × 15 ft garden bed at 6 inches deep, $35/yd³ material, $1.50/sq ft labor:
- Depth in feet: 6 ÷ 12 = 0.5 ft
- Cubic yards: (20 × 15 × 0.5) ÷ 27 = 5.56 yd³
- Material cost: 5.56 × $35 = $194.44
- Labor cost: 300 × $1.50 = $450.00
- Total estimated cost: $644.44
Cost reference (at default rates)
| Bed size | Estimated total cost |
|---|---|
| 10 ft × 10 ft | ~$215 |
| 20 ft × 15 ft | ~$644 |
| 30 ft × 20 ft | ~$1,289 |
How to measure your area
Measure the full length and width of the bed, lawn area, or fill zone in feet. Ask your supplier whether their delivery fee is included in the per-yard price or charged separately — it often isn’t included.
Frequently asked questions
What's included in this topsoil cost estimate?
Material cost (bulk cubic yards x price per yard) plus labor to spread and grade it (area x labor rate). It doesn't include delivery fees, which many suppliers charge separately based on distance.
Is bulk topsoil cheaper than bagged?
Yes, almost always — bulk delivery is more cost-effective for anything over about 2-3 cubic yards. For smaller amounts, bagged topsoil (see the Topsoil Calculator) is often more practical since you avoid delivery minimums.
What's a typical price per cubic yard for bulk topsoil?
This defaults to $35/yd³ as a placeholder — quality and screening level affect price significantly, and delivery fees vary by region. Use an actual quote from a local supplier for a precise number.
Why does this show cubic yards instead of tons?
Bulk topsoil is conventionally priced and delivered by the cubic yard, not by weight, so this calculator's material formula stops at cubic yards rather than converting to tons.
