How this calculator works

Studs are spaced evenly along each wall with a framing allowance for corners and openings, and plates run the wall length several times over. The calculator totals both across all your walls.

Formula: Studs per wall = ⌊(wall length in ÷ spacing)⌋ + 1. Total studs = studs per wall × walls × 1.15 (rounded up). Plate feet = wall length × plates × walls.

Worked example

Four 20 ft walls, 16-inch spacing, three plate rows:

  • Studs per wall: ⌊(240 ÷ 16)⌋ + 1 = 16 studs
  • Total with 15% for corners/openings: ⌈16 × 4 × 1.15⌉ = 74 studs
  • Plate lumber: 20 × 3 × 4 = 240 linear feet

Frequently asked questions

What does this framing calculator estimate?

It gives the stud and plate lumber for a set of walls at once: total studs including a 15% allowance for corners and openings, and the linear feet of plate stock. Enter one wall length and the number of identical walls, or run it per wall for a room with different sizes.

16 or 24 inch stud spacing?

16 inches on center is standard for load-bearing walls and pairs with 4-foot sheet goods. 24 inches on center is allowed for many non-load-bearing and single-story walls and saves lumber. Match the spacing to your plan and load.

Why add 15% to the stud count?

Evenly spaced studs are only the base. Real walls need extra studs at corners, wall intersections, and around every door and window — king studs, jack studs, cripples, and headers. The 15% allowance covers a typical wall; many openings push it higher.

How is plate lumber counted?

Plates run horizontally along the wall. A standard wall has three plate rows — one bottom plate plus a doubled top plate — so plate lumber is the wall length times three, times the number of walls.

Does this include headers and blocking?

No — headers over openings and fire blocking are separate and depend on your opening sizes. Size headers from a span table, and add blocking where your code requires it.
