How this calculator works
Standard drop-ceiling tiles are 2x2 ft, covering 4 square feet each. This calculator divides your ceiling’s area by 4 sq ft per tile and rounds up to a whole tile, since partial tiles aren’t installed.
Formula: Tiles = Ceiling area (sq ft) ÷ 4 sq ft per tile (2x2 ft tile).
Worked example
A 15 ft × 12 ft room (180 sq ft):
- Area: 15 × 12 = 180 sq ft
- Tiles: 180 ÷ 4 = 45.0 tiles
- At $6/tile, that’s $270.00 before waste.
- With 10% waste added: 45 × 1.1 = 49.5 → rounds up to 50 tiles, or $300.00.

How to measure your ceiling
Measure the room’s length and width in feet at the height where the drop ceiling will hang. If you’re using 2x4 ft tiles instead of 2x2 ft, divide your room’s area by 8 sq ft per tile rather than 4 to get an accurate count, and plan the grid layout so cut tiles at the edges are roughly even on both sides of the room.

10% covers cut tiles at the room's edges, where the grid rarely lines up with the wall perfectly, plus a spare or two for future access-panel replacements after plumbing or electrical work above the ceiling.
Can I mix ceiling tile styles or add recessed lighting panels?
