How this calculator works
Crushed granite gravel is sold by weight but measured by volume, so this calculator converts your length, width, and depth into cubic yards, then multiplies by crushed granite’s typical density of 1.4 tons per cubic yard to get the tons you need to order.
Formula: Cubic yards = (Length ft × Width ft × Depth ft) ÷ 27. Tons = Cubic yards × 1.4.
Worked example
A 20 ft × 10 ft path or driveway section at a 3-inch depth:
- Depth in feet: 3 ÷ 12 = 0.25 ft
- Cubic yards: (20 × 10 × 0.25) ÷ 27 ≈ 1.8519 yd³
- Tons: 1.8519 × 1.4 ≈ 2.59 tons

Is crushed granite the same as decomposed granite?
No. This calculator covers angular crushed granite gravel — larger, sharp-edged fragments used for driveways and drainage. Decomposed granite (DG) is the weathered, fine, sand-like material used for pathways and patios that compacts into a firmer, walkable surface. They come from the same rock but are processed and sized very differently.
Why does crushed granite cost more than crushed limestone or generic gravel?
Granite is a harder igneous rock than sedimentary limestone, which makes it more resistant to grinding down under traffic and weather, but also harder and more energy-intensive to crush in the first place. That extra processing cost, plus granite's durability, is reflected in the higher per-ton price most quarries charge.
