Brick Calculator
Buy Brick at Home Depot →How this calculator works
A standard modular brick has an exposed face of about 0.148 square feet (8 in × 2.67 in), which is where the commonly cited “~7 bricks per square foot” figure comes from. This calculator divides your wall area by that face size to get the brick count, rounding up since bricks are bought as whole units.
Formula: Bricks = Wall area (sq ft) ÷ 0.148 sq ft per brick.
Worked example
A wall 10 ft long × 8 ft high (80 sq ft):
- Bricks: 80 ÷ 0.148 = 540.5 → 541 bricks
- At $0.65/brick, that’s $351.65 before waste.
- With 10% waste added: 594.6 → rounds up to 595 bricks, or $386.75.
Coverage reference
| Wall area | Bricks needed (~6.75/sq ft) |
|---|---|
| 80 sq ft | 541 bricks |
| 160 sq ft | 1,082 bricks |
| 240 sq ft | 1,622 bricks |
How to measure your wall
Measure the wall’s full length and height in feet. For walls with door or window openings, you can subtract the opening’s area from the total for a more precise count, though most estimators skip small openings since the waste allowance covers them.
Frequently asked questions
How many bricks do I need for a wall?
A standard modular brick's exposed face is about 0.148 square feet, which works out to roughly 6.75 bricks per square foot. Enter your wall's length and height and this calculator gives you the brick count directly.
Should I enter length and height, or length and width?
For a wall, enter the wall's length in the Length field and its height in the Width field — the calculator just multiplies the two to get area, so it doesn't matter which field holds which dimension.
How much waste should I add for brick?
5-10% is standard, covering broken bricks, cuts at corners and openings, and pattern-matching waste. Complex patterns or a lot of openings may need more.
Does this include mortar?
No — this calculator counts bricks only. Mortar quantity depends on joint thickness and is typically estimated separately, around 3 bags of mortar mix per 100 bricks as a rough starting point.
