How this calculator works

The calculator takes a volume you already have, in cubic feet, along with a fill or spread depth in inches. It converts the depth to feet, then divides the volume by that depth to give you the area, in square feet, that the volume will cover.

Formula: Coverage area (sq ft) = volume in cubic feet ÷ (depth in inches ÷ 12).

Worked example

50 cubic feet of material spread at a 4-inch depth:

  • Depth in feet: 4 ÷ 12 = 0.333 ft
  • Coverage area: 50 ÷ 0.333 = 150 sq ft

Notes

This is the reverse of the usual “how much material do I need for this area” question. Most material calculators ask for an area and a depth and hand back a volume to order. This one is useful when the volume is already known — leftover mulch, gravel, or concrete sitting in a pile or a partial load — and the question is how much ground that volume will actually cover at a given depth.

The relationship between depth and coverage runs in opposite directions. Spread the same volume thinner, at a shallower depth, and it covers more square feet. Pile it deeper, and the same volume covers fewer square feet. Getting the depth right matters as much as getting the volume right, since a small change in depth changes the coverage area by the same proportion.

Keep the depth in inches when entering it here, since that’s the normal way fill and spread depths are described for mulch, gravel, topsoil, and similar materials. The calculator handles the conversion from inches to feet internally before doing the division.

How is cubic feet converted to square feet?

Divide your volume in cubic feet by the depth, with the depth converted from inches to feet first (inches ÷ 12). The result is the area, in square feet, that the volume will cover at that depth. A thinner depth spreads the same volume over more square feet; a deeper fill covers less.

Why do I need a depth to go from cubic feet to square feet?

Volume has three dimensions and area only has two, so there's no single conversion between cubic feet and square feet without fixing one of those dimensions first. Depth is the dimension you remove — once it's set, the remaining length and width combine into a coverage area.

When would I need to convert cubic feet to square feet instead of the other way around?

This direction is useful when you already have a volume — leftover mulch, a partial bag of gravel, or a known batch of concrete — and want to know how much ground it will cover. The more common calculation goes the other way: area and depth in, volume out, for ordering material to fill a known space.
