How to calculate cubic meters

Where cubic meters come up
- Concrete and screed. Metric suppliers batch and deliver by the cubic meter. A truck typically carries several cubic meters, and small loads may carry a surcharge.
- Soil, sand, and gravel. Builders’ merchants sell bulk bags and loose loads by volume or weight. A “one cubic meter” bulk bag is often filled to a little less in practice, so ask what it actually holds.
- Shipping and storage. Freight is often quoted per cubic meter of space, so measure the outer size of crates and pallets.
- Water. Tanks, ponds, and pools are rated in liters or cubic meters. Utility bills in many countries meter water in m³.
How to measure in meters
- Pick one unit. Convert every measurement to meters before entering it. Centimeters ÷ 100; millimeters ÷ 1,000.
- Measure inside dimensions for the capacity of a tank, room, or container. Measure outside dimensions for the material in a solid block.
- Break up odd shapes. An L-shaped room is two boxes. Calculate each and add them.
- Round sensibly. Two decimal places, to the nearest centimeter, is enough for most jobs.
Common mistakes
- Mixing centimeters with meters. One dimension in cm makes the answer 100 times too large.
- Using the wrong gallon. US and imperial gallons differ by about 20%.
- Confusing square and cubic meters. Flooring is sold in m²; concrete, soil, and water are in m³.
- Assuming one m³ of soil weighs a tonne. Only water is about 1 tonne per m³. Soil and gravel are usually heavier.
