How this calculator works

A pond’s surface area — length times width — sets the footprint for both materials and labor. This calculator applies a material rate and a labor rate, each per square foot, to that footprint separately, then adds the two costs together for a total.

Formula: Total cost = Pond surface area (length × width) × Material rate per sq ft + same area × Labor rate per sq ft.

Worked example

A 20 ft × 15 ft pond (300 sq ft), at $8/sq ft material and $10/sq ft labor:

  • Surface area: 20 × 15 = 300 sq ft
  • Material cost: 300 × $8 = $2,400
  • Labor cost: 300 × $10 = $3,000
  • Total: $2,400 + $3,000 = $5,400

Notes

Construction type is the first cost lever. A lined pond — liner plus underlayment — generally costs less than a poured-concrete or gunite pond of the same size, but it has a shorter service life before the liner needs replacing, which is worth weighing against the lower upfront price.

Excavation is the biggest variable this per-square-foot rate has to absorb, because it doesn’t show up in the surface-area number at all. A deep koi pond with a below-frost-line deep zone takes far more digging than a shallow decorative pond with the same surface footprint, even though both would plug the same area into this calculator. Rocky or difficult-to-access sites raise excavation cost further, independent of pond size.

Because depth and site conditions swing costs so much, treat the material and labor rates you enter as your own local estimates, refined with a contractor quote rather than industry averages.
