How this calculator works
Lime is applied to lawns by weight per square foot of turf, the same way fertilizer is. This calculator takes your lawn’s total area and your chosen application rate — pounds of lime per 1,000 square feet — and multiplies them out to a total pounds figure.
Formula: Lime needed = (Lawn area ÷ 1,000) × Application rate (lb per 1,000 sq ft).
Worked example
An 8,000 sq ft lawn, applied at 35 lb per 1,000 sq ft:
- Area in thousands of sq ft: 8,000 ÷ 1,000 = 8
- Lime needed: 8 × 35 = 280 lb

The application rate itself is the number that matters most, and it isn’t fixed — it depends on how far your soil’s current pH is from the target range. Most lawn grasses want soil pH roughly between 6.0 and 7.0, and the further below that range your soil sits, the more lime it takes to close the gap.
Soil type changes the picture too. Clay soils hold onto acidity more stubbornly than sandy soils, so shifting clay pH by a given amount typically calls for more lime than shifting sandy soil by the same amount. Because of this, a soil test is the right starting point before you settle on a rate — it tells you both your current pH and your soil type, which together determine the rate you plug into this calculator.
Pelletized lime and powdered agricultural lime raise pH the same way chemically. The practical difference is handling: pellets spread more evenly through a standard lawn spreader and produce less dust, while powdered lime can be harder to distribute consistently, though it’s often cheaper.
