Sand Calculator
Buy Sand at Home Depot →How this calculator works
Sand is sold by the ton like gravel, just at a slightly lower density (1.35 tons per cubic yard instead of 1.4). This calculator uses the same volume-to-weight formula, swapping in sand’s density.
Formula: Cubic yards = (Length ft × Width ft × Depth ft) ÷ 27. Tons = Cubic yards × 1.35.
Worked example
An 8 ft × 6 ft sandbox filled 12 inches deep:
- Depth in feet: 12 ÷ 12 = 1.0 ft
- Cubic yards: (8 × 6 × 1.0) ÷ 27 = 1.78 yd³
- Tons: 1.78 × 1.35 = 2.40 tons
- At $40/ton, that’s $96.00 before waste.
Coverage reference
| Depth | Coverage per ton |
|---|---|
| 6 in | ~40 sq ft |
| 12 in | ~20 sq ft |
| 18 in | ~13 sq ft |
How to measure your area
For a sandbox, measure the inside dimensions of the frame, not the outside — you’re filling the interior space only.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a cubic yard of sand weigh?
About 1.35 tons (2,700 lbs), slightly less than gravel because sand grains pack a bit less densely.
How much sand do I need for a sandbox?
A 12-inch fill depth is standard for play sandboxes, giving kids enough depth to dig without hitting the bottom.
What's the difference between this and the paver sand calculator?
This calculator is for bulk fill sand (sandboxes, fill, leveling). The paver sand calculator is tuned for the thin 1-inch bedding layer under pavers specifically.
Can I use this for play sand and fill sand?
Yes, both use roughly the same density. Adjust the depth field to match your specific project.
