How this calculator works

This combines two pieces: the material cost (tonnage, from the same weight-based formula as the Asphalt Calculator, times your price per ton) and a labor cost (your paved area times a per-square-foot labor rate). Both price fields are editable — the defaults are placeholders, not quotes.

Formula: Total cost = (Tons × Price/ton) + (Area sq ft × Labor rate/sq ft).

Worked example

A 30 ft × 12 ft (360 sq ft) driveway at 3 inches, $120/ton material, $2.50/sq ft labor:

  • Tons: 6.53 (same geometry as the Asphalt Calculator example)
  • Material cost: 6.53 × $120 = $783.00
  • Labor cost: 360 × $2.50 = $900.00
  • Total estimated cost: $1,683.00

Cost reference (at default rates)

Driveway size Estimated total cost
20 ft × 10 ft ~$935
30 ft × 12 ft ~$1,683
40 ft × 16 ft ~$2,992

How to measure your area

Use the same footprint measurement as the Asphalt Calculator. For the labor rate, use an actual quote from a local paving contractor if you have one — the default is a national placeholder average.

Frequently asked questions

What's included in this cost estimate?

Material cost (tonnage × price per ton) plus labor cost (area × labor rate). It does not include excavation, base preparation, or permits — add those separately if they apply to your job.

What's a typical labor rate for asphalt paving?

This defaults to $2.50/sq ft as a placeholder — actual labor rates vary significantly by region and contractor. Edit the price fields to match quotes you've received.

Why is this different from the Asphalt Calculator?

The Asphalt Calculator gives you tonnage only. This one adds a labor cost on top, so you get a full installed-cost estimate rather than just a materials number.

Does this include the cost of a new base layer?

No — this estimates the asphalt layer only. If you also need a new gravel base, run the Gravel Driveway Calculator separately and add that cost.
