Asphalt Tonnage Calculator
Buy Asphalt Tonnage at Home Depot →How this calculator works
This uses the identical weight-based formula as the main asphalt calculator, but defaults to a shallower 2-inch depth since it’s built for patch and overlay jobs rather than full-depth driveways.
Formula: Tons = (Length ft × Width ft × Depth ft) × 145 lbs/ft³ ÷ 2000.
Worked example
A 50 ft × 10 ft patch at 2 inches deep:
- Depth in feet: 2 ÷ 12 = 0.167 ft
- Cubic feet: 50 × 10 × 0.167 = 83.3 ft³
- Tons: (83.3 × 145) ÷ 2000 = 6.04 tons
- At $120/ton, that’s $725.00 before waste.
Coverage reference
| Thickness | Coverage per ton |
|---|---|
| 1.5 in | ~110 sq ft |
| 2 in | ~83 sq ft |
| 2.5 in | ~66 sq ft |
How to measure your area
Measure the patch or overlay area precisely at its edges — over-ordering asphalt is expensive since leftover mix can’t be reused once it cools.
Frequently asked questions
How is asphalt tonnage calculated for a patch or overlay?
The same way as a full driveway: area times depth gives cubic feet, then multiplied by 145 lbs/ft³ and divided by 2000 to get tons.
What depth is typical for a road patch?
1.5-2 inches for a standard patch or overlay, thinner than a new driveway since it's going over an existing surface.
How many tons of asphalt does a truck deliver?
A standard dump truck load is roughly 10-20 tons, so this calculator helps you figure out how many truckloads a larger job needs.
Does this differ from the main Asphalt Calculator?
It's the same underlying formula, framed for tonnage-focused jobs like patches and overlays rather than full driveway builds — the default depth is shallower.
