Building an in-ground pool involves both material costs (the shell and basic equipment) and labor to excavate and construct it. This calculator estimates total cost by applying a material rate and a labor rate, both per square foot of pool surface area, and adding them together.
Formula: Total cost = pool surface area (length × width) × material rate per sq ft + same area × labor rate per sq ft.
Worked example
A 30 ft × 15 ft pool (450 sq ft), $40/sq ft material, $40/sq ft labor:
- Surface area: 30 × 15 = 450 sq ft
- Material: 450 × $40 = $18,000
- Labor: 450 × $40 = $18,000
- Total cost: $36,000

Gunite and concrete pools cost more per square foot than vinyl liner or fiberglass pools, but they last longer and allow custom shapes since they’re built on-site rather than installed as a prefabricated shell. Choose a material rate that matches the pool type you’re planning.
