Vinyl plank calculator: boxes from room area

A vinyl plank calculator multiplies the room’s length by its width, divides by the area in one box, and rounds up to whole boxes. This one uses 24 square feet per box. A 15 × 12 ft room is 180 sq ft, which is 7.5 boxes, so you buy 8. With the 10% waste box ticked, the count is 9.

Box coverage varies by brand. Check the number printed on your carton before you order.

The formula in plain words

Area = length × width. Boxes = area ÷ 24, rounded up. With waste, boxes = (area ÷ 24) × 1.1, rounded up. Cost = boxes × the price per box.

Worked example, a living room

The room is 15 ft by 12 ft, and boxes are $70.

• Area: 15 × 12 = 180 sq ft
• Boxes: 180 ÷ 24 = 7.5, rounded up to 8
• Cost: 8 × $70 = $560
• With 10% waste: 8.25, rounded up to 9 boxes, or $630

Worked example, a small den

A den measures 10 ft by 10 ft.

• Area: 100 sq ft
• Boxes: 100 ÷ 24 = 4.17, rounded up to 5
• With waste: 4.58, still 5
• Cost: 5 × $70 = $350

In this case the rounding already gives you extra, so ticking the waste box makes no difference.

How to measure

• Measure the length and width at floor level, including closets and alcoves.
• For an L-shaped room, split into rectangles and add.
• Skip built-in cabinets the floor will run under, and include the area under freestanding furniture.
• Take the room’s measurements twice. A 6 inch error across a long room adds up.
• Record the carton’s coverage, then recalculate by hand if it differs from 24.

Preparing the room

• Check the manufacturer’s instructions for how long planks should sit in the room before install.
• Make sure the subfloor is flat, clean and dry.
• Leave the expansion gap the maker specifies along the walls.
• Plan the starting row, so the last row is not a thin strip. Measure the room width, divide by the plank width, and if the last row would be under about 2 inches, trim the first row instead.
• Pull baseboard or plan for quarter-round, since the expansion gap has to be covered.

Common mistakes

• Using the default coverage when the carton says something else.
• Ignoring waste in rooms with many corners.
• Buying exactly the number you need. Keep an extra box in case of a damaged plank, and from the same lot, so the color matches.
• Rounding the room area down.
• Skipping the subfloor check, which leads to gaps and squeaks later.

What the numbers cost

At $70 for a 24 sq ft box, planks cost $70 ÷ 24 = $2.92 per square foot. For the 180 sq ft living room with 9 boxes, the material costs $630 ÷ 180 = $3.50 per square foot of floor, because you buy more than the room’s area. That gap is the price of rounding and waste.
