The formula in plain words

Adding waste to example 1: 180 × 1.10 = 198 sq ft of planks. The material becomes 198 × $3.50 = $693, and with labor still on 180 sq ft the total is $1,143.

Boxes of planks

How to measure
Measure the length and width of each room in feet and multiply. For rooms with alcoves or closets, add each rectangle. If the floor runs through a doorway to the next room, include that strip.
Common mistakes
- Pricing the planks without waste. Cuts and a few bad pieces use more than you expect.
- Ignoring the subfloor. Vinyl planks show bumps and dips from below, so flatness matters.
- Leaving out transitions and trim, which can add up in a house with many doorways.
- Comparing a price for planks alone with an installed price.
- Skipping the acclimation instructions on the carton.
Wear layer and thickness
Labels list a wear layer in mils, where one mil is a thousandth of an inch. A thicker wear layer generally suits a busy room better. The plank’s total thickness matters at doors, because it sets the height of the transition. The subfloor also has to be flat to the maker’s tolerance, so a quote that includes leveling is worth the money.
Floating and glue-down installs
Click-together planks float over the subfloor, which makes them quick to install and easy to replace in sections. Glue-down planks are bonded to the subfloor and need a very smooth surface and the right adhesive. The method changes the labor rate, so tell the installer which product you have chosen. Quotes for the glue-down kind often run higher for the extra prep and cure time.
