How this calculator works
Installing vinyl plank flooring involves both the cost of the material itself and the labor to install it. This calculator estimates total cost by applying a material rate and a labor rate, both per square foot of room area, and adding them together.
Formula: Total installed cost = room area × material rate per sq ft + room area × labor rate per sq ft.
Worked example
A 15 ft × 12 ft room (180 sq ft), $3.50/sq ft material, $2.50/sq ft labor:
- Room area: 15 × 12 = 180 sq ft
- Material: 180 × $3.50 = $630
- Labor: 180 × $2.50 = $450
- Total cost: $1,080
Notes
LVP typically costs more than basic laminate but less than hardwood, and it’s water-resistant enough for kitchens and bathrooms, which most laminate and hardwood aren’t rated for. That combination of durability and moisture resistance is a big part of its appeal for busy rooms.
Thicker “rigid core” LVP costs more per square foot than thinner flexible vinyl plank. If you’re pricing out a rigid core product, use a material rate that reflects that higher cost rather than a rate for standard flexible LVP.
