How this calculator works

A 4 ft x 8 ft beadboard or MDF sheet (32 sq ft) is ripped lengthwise to your wainscot height and installed along the wall run. This calculator multiplies your wall run by wainscot height to get area, then divides by sheet coverage, rounding up.

Formula: Sheets = (Wall run ft × Wainscot height ft) ÷ 32 sq ft per sheet, rounded up.

Worked example

A 40 ft wall run at a 3 ft wainscot height:

  • Area: 40 x 3 = 120 sq ft
  • Sheets: 120 ÷ 32 ≈ 3.75 → rounds up to 4 sheets
  • At $30/sheet, that’s 4 × 30 = $120.00 before waste.

How to measure your wainscot run

Add up the length of every wall segment that will get wainscoting — don’t subtract doorways unless the wainscoting is genuinely interrupted for a long stretch. Enter your target wainscot height (measured from the floor to the top of the cap rail) as the width field so the area calculation matches your actual panel coverage.

Why is 3 ft a common wainscot height?

3 ft (36 in) lines up with standard chair-rail height and is a common proportion for dining rooms and hallways. Shorter wainscoting (28-32 in) is also common in bathrooms and mudrooms; adjust the height field to match your design.

How much waste should I add for wainscoting?

10% is a reasonable default, but door and window openings along the run increase offcuts, since each interruption in the wall creates two cut edges instead of one continuous panel. Rooms with several doorways or windows in the wainscoted section should use 15-20%.

Does this account for cap rail, base cap, or chair rail trim?

No — this counts panel sheets only. Cap rail, chair rail, and baseboard trim pieces are linear-foot materials calculated separately from your total wall run length, not from the sheet area.
