A riser a half-inch too tall, treads that vary, a flight that’s just slightly steep — you feel it as a stumble even if you can’t name why. Getting the dimensions right is equal parts code, geometry, and comfort. Here’s how they fit together.
The numbers that define a stair
Every staircase comes down to two measurements repeated over and over:
- Riser — the vertical height of each step
- Tread — the horizontal depth you step on
Get these two right and consistent, and the stair feels effortless. Get them wrong and every trip up feels like work.
What the code allows
Residential building code (the IRC, which most US jurisdictions follow) sets the outer limits:

The comfort rule the pros use

Worked example: sizing a real flight
Say you’re building stairs for a 44-inch total rise (a common deck-to-ground height):
- Number of risers: 44 ÷ 7.75 = 5.7, round up to 6 risers
- Actual riser height: 44 ÷ 6 = 7.33 inches (comfortable, under the cap)
- Number of treads: 6 − 1 = 5 treads
- Total run: 5 × 10-inch treads = 50 inches
- Comfort check: (2 × 7.33) + 10 = 24.67 ✓
Notice we didn’t just divide 44 by 7.75 and stop — we rounded up to get an even number of risers, then divided back to find the actual height. That’s the key move: you always end up with equal risers slightly shorter than your maximum.
From dimensions to a stringer
The stringer is the diagonal board the treads sit on, and its length is the hypotenuse of your total rise and total run:
Stringer length = √(rise² + run²) = √(44² + 50²) ≈ 66.6 inches ≈ 5.55 feet

Common mistakes
- Uneven risers. Usually from not accounting for finished flooring thickness at the top or bottom. Measure to the finished surfaces.

- Cutting stringers from 2×10. Notching removes too much wood; use 2×12.
