How this calculator works
Polymeric sand is swept and compacted into paver joints, then activated with water to lock the joints together. This calculator divides your total paved area by the standard 60 square feet per 50-lb bag coverage rate for standard joint widths.
Formula: Bags = Paved area (sq ft) ÷ 60 sq ft per bag.

A 20 ft × 10 ft paver patio (200 sq ft):

Measure the full paved surface area in feet — the same footprint you used to order the pavers themselves, since polymeric sand coverage is based on the total paved area rather than just the joint lines. How much area does a bag of polymeric sand cover?
About 60 square feet per 50-lb bag with standard joint widths (around 1/8 to 3/16 inch). This calculator divides your paved area by that coverage rate to get the bag count.
Why do wider paver joints reduce coverage per bag?
Wider joints simply hold more sand volume per linear foot of joint, so the same bag fills less total surface area. Natural stone or irregular pavers with joints over 1/4 inch can cut coverage well below the 60 sq ft standard rate — check your paver manufacturer's joint-width guidance before ordering.
How does the watering activation step work?
After sweeping polymeric sand into the joints and compacting it, you lightly mist the surface with water in stages, which activates a polymer binder that hardens the sand in place. Oversaturating it too fast, or watering before excess sand is fully swept off the paver faces, can leave a hazy residue on the surface.
Why isn't waste added to the polymeric sand calculation?
Polymeric sand is swept into joints from an opened bag rather than cut to size, so there's no cutting waste involved — any sand left in the bag after sweeping and compacting simply goes toward the next section or a future top-up. That's why this calculator doesn't apply a waste percentage the way sheet or unit materials do.
Can I use polymeric sand on old joints without regular sand in them first?
It's best applied over clean, dry joints down to a solid base — regular jointing sand should be fully swept out and joints vacuumed of debris and old sand first. Applying polymeric sand over leftover regular sand can prevent it from bonding properly and cause premature cracking or washout.
