How this calculator works

This calculator assumes a standard 12 in × 12 in paver (1 square foot each) — the most common size for patios and walkways. It divides your area by that coverage figure to get the paver count, rounding up since pavers are sold as whole units.

Formula: Pavers = Patio/path area (sq ft) ÷ 1 sq ft per paver.

Worked example

A 20 ft × 10 ft patio (200 sq ft):

  • Pavers: 200 ÷ 1 = 200 pavers
  • At $3.50/paver, that’s $700.00 before waste.
  • With the waste toggle checked (adds a flat 10%): 220 pavers, or $770.00. For a simple layout, 5% is often enough — order a bit less than the toggle suggests if your layout is straightforward.

Coverage reference

Patio area Pavers needed (12x12 in)
100 sq ft 100 pavers
200 sq ft 200 pavers
400 sq ft 400 pavers

How to measure your patio

Measure the full patio or walkway footprint, including a few inches of margin for edge restraints. For irregular shapes, break the area into rectangles, calculate each separately, and add the paver counts together.

Frequently asked questions

How many pavers do I need for a patio?

This calculator assumes a standard 12 in x 12 in paver, covering 1 square foot each. Enter your patio or path area and it converts directly to paver count. If your pavers are a different size, divide your area by your paver's actual square footage instead.

How much waste should I add for pavers?

5% is typical for a straightforward rectangular layout. Curved edges, herringbone or diagonal patterns, and areas with lots of cuts around obstacles should use 10% or more.

Do I need a base and sand layer under pavers?

Yes, for a durable installation: a compacted gravel base (4-6 in) for support, then a 1-inch bedding sand layer for leveling before laying the pavers. See the Paver Sand Calculator for the sand layer.

Does paver count include edge restraints or polymeric sand?

No — this calculator counts pavers only. Edge restraints (linear feet of the perimeter) and joint-filling polymeric sand (by coverage area) are separate materials with their own quantities.
