How this calculator works
Lowering pool pH with muriatic acid scales with two things: how much water you have and how far you need to drop the pH. This calculator uses a standard rule-of-thumb dose per 10,000 gallons per 0.2 pH drop, then scales it to your pool’s actual size and pH gap.
Formula: A commonly used rule of thumb is about 26 fl oz of muriatic acid per 10,000 gallons for each 0.2 drop in pH. Total dose = (pH drop ÷ 0.2) × 26 oz × (pool gallons ÷ 10,000).
Worked example
A 20,000-gallon pool at pH 7.8, targeting pH 7.4 (a 0.4 drop):
- pH drop: 7.8 − 7.4 = 0.4
- Number of 0.2 increments: 0.4 ÷ 0.2 = 2
- Dose: 2 × 26 oz × (20,000 ÷ 10,000) = 2 × 26 × 2 = 104 oz
Notes
Add acid slowly around the pool’s perimeter with the pump running, rather than pouring it in one spot. Then retest after it has had time to circulate, usually a few hours, instead of dumping the full calculated dose at once and hoping it lands where you want.
pH swings are easier to correct in small steps than to overshoot and have to raise it back up afterward. If you’re dropping pH by a large amount, consider splitting the dose across two applications with a retest in between.
