How this calculator works

Sizing a pool pump starts with a simple question: how much water needs to move through the filter, and how fast? This calculator takes your pool’s total volume and your target turnover time, then works out the minimum flow rate, in gallons per minute (GPM), the pump needs to deliver.

Formula: Minimum pump flow (GPM) = pool volume in gallons ÷ (turnover time in hours × 60 minutes per hour).

Worked example

A 20,000-gallon pool with an 8-hour turnover target:

  • Turnover time in minutes: 8 × 60 = 480 minutes
  • Minimum flow: 20,000 ÷ 480 = 41.67 GPM

Notes

A full turnover means the entire pool volume has passed through the filter once. Residential pools commonly target an 8-hour turnover, which works out to roughly one full cycle per day during normal pump operating hours.

Turnover time is how long it takes the pump and filter to circulate a volume of water equal to the entire pool once. A shorter turnover time means the pump has to move water faster, which requires a higher GPM (gallons per minute) flow rate.

What turnover time should my pool target?

Residential pools commonly target an 8-hour turnover, which lines up with roughly one full cycle per day during typical daily operating hours. Commercial or heavily used pools may target a shorter turnover, which pushes the required pump GPM higher.

How do I convert required GPM into a pump size?

Once you know your minimum required GPM, check pump and filter spec sheets for a model rated to deliver at least that flow rate against your system's plumbing and filter resistance. What happens if my pump is undersized for my pool?
