How this calculator works
A gambrel roof has two pitches per side — a steep lower slope and a shallower upper slope, the shape you’d recognize on a classic barn. Since the two slopes are different lengths at different angles, this calculator finds the actual sloped length of each segment separately, then combines them across both sides of the building.
Formula: Each segment’s length = run ÷ cos(arctan(pitch ÷ 12)). Total area = (lower segment length + upper segment length) × building length × 2 sides.
Worked example
A 30 ft building length, with a lower slope of 4 ft run at a 24-in-12 pitch and an upper slope of 6 ft run at a 6-in-12 pitch:
- Building length: 30 ft
- Lower slope: 4 ft run, 24-in-12 pitch
- Upper slope: 6 ft run, 6-in-12 pitch
- Total roof area: ≈ 939.15 sq ft
Notes
The steep lower slope on a gambrel roof sheds water fast and, unlike a single-pitch gable roof on the same footprint, opens up extra usable space in the loft underneath it. That’s the main reason barns and barn-style homes use this shape.
Because the lower and upper slopes have different run and pitch values, each segment needs its own shingle and underlayment order — you can’t treat the whole roof as one uniform slope when estimating materials.

What makes a gambrel roof different from a gable roof?
A gable roof has one pitch per side. A gambrel roof has two pitches per side — a steep lower slope near the eaves and a shallower upper slope near the ridge, the classic barn silhouette. Because there are two distinct slope segments, each needs its own run and pitch entered to calculate total area.
Why does the calculator need a separate run and pitch for each slope?
The lower and upper slopes on a gambrel roof are different lengths and different angles, so they cover different amounts of surface area. Entering each segment's own run and pitch lets the calculator find each segment's actual sloped length before adding them together.
How do I measure the run for each slope segment?
Run is the horizontal distance covered by that slope segment, measured from where it starts to where it ends — not the sloped length itself. For the lower slope, that's the horizontal distance from the eave to the break point; for the upper slope, from the break point to the ridge.
Does this calculator include ridge caps or flashing in the area total?
No — it calculates the sloped surface area of the roof planes only. Ridge caps, the transition flashing where the two slopes meet, and other trim details are separate items that a roofer typically estimates and orders on top of the base shingle area.
