This threshold is a general planning guideline, not a precise engineering calculation. Actual required capacity also depends on local rainfall intensity — areas that see heavier downpours push more water through the same roof area, which can justify a larger gutter even below the 2,000 sq ft line.
Roof pitch matters too. A steeper roof sheds rainwater faster than a shallow one of the same area, which raises the peak flow rate into the gutter at any given moment. That can call for a larger gutter even on a smaller, steeply pitched roof.
Gutter profile also affects real-world capacity. Half-round gutters carry somewhat less water than a K-style gutter of the same nominal size, since less of their cross-section sits below the point where water would spill over the front edge.
