How this calculator works

A trench isn’t filled with backfill alone — the buried pipe running through it takes up its own volume. This calculator subtracts the pipe’s volume (treated as a cylinder) from the trench’s total volume to give you the actual backfill material needed.

Formula: Backfill volume = trench volume − buried pipe volume (π × (pipe diameter ÷ 2)² × pipe length).

Worked example

A 300 cubic foot trench, with an 8-inch diameter pipe running 100 ft through it:

  • Pipe radius: 8 in ÷ 2 = 4 in
  • Pipe volume: π × (4 in)² × 100 ft ≈ 34.91 ft³
  • Backfill needed: 300 − 34.91 ≈ 265.09 ft³
  • In cubic yards: 265.09 ÷ 27 ≈ 9.82 yd³

Notes

The pipe itself displaces a real amount of volume that shouldn’t be double-counted in the backfill order. For a small-diameter pipe in a large trench, this correction is minor. For a large-diameter pipe — a big culvert or main line — in a tight trench, it meaningfully reduces the backfill needed. This doesn’t account for bedding material around the pipe, which is usually a separate, finer material placed before general backfill.

Why does the pipe's volume need to be subtracted from backfill?

A buried pipe physically occupies space inside the trench, so that volume shouldn't be counted twice — once as trench volume and again as backfill. Subtracting the pipe's volume gives the actual amount of soil needed to fill the remaining space around and above it.

How much does the pipe correction matter?

It depends on the pipe's size relative to the trench. For a small-diameter pipe in a large trench, the correction is minor. For a large-diameter pipe, like a big culvert or main line, in a tight trench, it meaningfully reduces the amount of backfill actually needed.

Does this calculator include bedding material?

No. Bedding material, placed around the pipe before general backfill, is usually a separate, finer material with its own volume calculation. This calculator covers only the general backfill volume after accounting for the pipe itself.

How is pipe volume calculated?

Pipe volume uses the standard cylinder formula: pi times the radius (half the diameter) squared, times the pipe's length. That volume is what gets subtracted from the total trench volume to arrive at the backfill volume needed.
