How this calculator works
This calculator totals the flow rate for a drip irrigation zone by multiplying the number of emitters by each emitter’s flow rate in gallons per hour. Dividing that total by 60 converts it to gallons per minute, which is the unit most water supply lines are rated in.
Formula: Zone flow rate (GPH) = number of emitters × flow rate per emitter (GPH). GPM = GPH ÷ 60.
Worked example
- Emitters: 50
- Flow rate per emitter: 1 GPH
- Total flow: 50 × 1 = 50 GPH
- In GPM: 50 ÷ 60 ≈ 0.83 GPM

Check the total zone GPM against your spigot or supply line’s available flow rate before building out a zone. A typical residential outdoor spigot supplies somewhere around 8-10 GPM, so drip zones — which run at a fraction of a GPM each — rarely stress supply on their own.
Combining many zones or mixing drip emitters with sprinkler heads on the same line can add up, though, so it’s worth totaling everything running at once rather than checking zones in isolation.
