How this calculator works
Each sprinkler head waters a set radius of lawn, so the number of heads a zone needs comes down to dividing the zone’s total area by how much ground one head covers. Because you can’t install a fraction of a head, the result is always rounded up to the next whole head.
Formula: Sprinkler heads needed = Area ÷ Coverage per head, rounded up.
Worked example
A 5,000 sq ft lawn zone, with 300 sq ft of coverage per head:
- Raw division: 5,000 ÷ 300 ≈ 16.67
- Rounded up: 17 heads
Notes
Coverage per head isn’t a fixed number — it depends on the sprinkler type and the spacing pattern you’re using. Spray heads typically cover a smaller radius, closer to the 300 sq ft range used in this example. Rotor heads throw water further and cover more area per head, but they need more water pressure to perform properly, so a zone’s available pressure can limit which type is practical.
Head count alone doesn’t guarantee even watering. What matters more is head-to-head coverage — laying heads out so each one’s spray reaches all the way to the next head, rather than two sprays just barely meeting in the middle. A zone can have the “right” number of heads by this calculator’s math and still leave dry patches if the spacing doesn’t achieve that overlap.
