A rubber mulch calculator turns an area and a depth into the number of bags to buy. It finds the volume in cubic feet, divides by the cubic feet in one bag, and rounds up to a whole bag. This one uses 0.8 cubic feet per bag and a default price of $13.
Cubic feet = length × width × (depth in inches ÷ 12). Bags = cubic feet ÷ 0.8, rounded up. Cost = bags × price per bag.
Worked examples
Example 1, the default bed. 10 ft × 10 ft, 3 in deep, $13 per bag.

- Bags: 25 ÷ 0.8 = 31.25, rounded up to 32

Each extra inch adds the same number of bags, so deeper layers get expensive fast.
Choosing a depth
For landscape beds, a layer of 2 to 3 inches covers the soil and holds in place. For a play area, the depth has to meet a safety standard for the tallest piece of equipment, and the maker tests its product for a specific fall height. A play surface that is too thin does not cushion a fall. Read the label, and when in doubt, ask the playground equipment manufacturer.

Neither is perfect. If you want the soil to improve over time, wood mulch does that. If you want a surface that stays put for years, rubber does that.
Before you lay it
Clear the area of weeds and grass and rake the soil flat. Many people lay a layer of landscape fabric under rubber mulch to stop weeds from coming up and to keep the product from mixing into the soil. Edging helps keep the product in place on a slope or beside a walkway. Rubber mulch comes in bags, and some suppliers sell it in bulk.
Measuring
Measure length and width in feet. For curved beds, take three widths and average them. For round areas, measure the diameter and use 0.785 × diameter × diameter as the area. Enter the depth in inches, as the field asks.

Compare the price per cubic foot of each option: divide a bag’s price by 0.8 to get its cost per cubic foot.
