How this calculator works

Every floor has to hold up two kinds of weight at once. One is the floor itself — framing, subfloor, ceiling below, fixed finishes — which never changes and is called the dead load. The other is everything that comes and goes on top of it — people, furniture, stored goods — called the live load. Add the two together and multiply by the floor’s area, and you get the total load the floor has to carry.

This calculator takes your floor area plus a live load and dead load in pounds per square foot (psf), and returns the total load in pounds. Building codes set minimum required live loads by occupancy type, so this tool also references the IBC minimums as a starting point for common uses.

Formula: Design load (psf) = live load + dead load. Total load (lb) = floor area × design load. IBC minimum live loads vary by use: residential ≈ 40 psf, office ≈ 50 psf, retail/mercantile ≈ 100 psf.

Worked example

A 15 ft × 12 ft floor area, 40 psf live load (residential), 10 psf dead load:

  • Floor area: 15 × 12 = 180 sq ft
  • Design load: 40 + 10 = 50 psf
  • Total load: 180 × 50 = 9,000 lb

Notes

Residential floors are only required to carry 40 psf of live load, while retail and mercantile spaces are required to carry 100 psf — two and a half times as much. That gap exists because occupant density and stored-goods weight differ hugely between a bedroom and a sales floor packed with shelving and shoppers.

Never assume the residential default applies to a non-residential space, or vice versa. Always confirm the exact minimum live load for your specific occupancy classification in IBC Table 1607.1, since the code breaks occupancies down into many more categories than residential, office, and retail alone — and local amendments can push minimums higher still.

IBC Table 1607.1 lists minimum uniformly distributed live loads by specific occupancy and use, down to categories like classrooms, corridors, or mechanical rooms. Your local building department can confirm which category applies and whether any local amendments increase the minimum for your project.

Does this calculator size the floor structure for me?

No. It only multiplies your floor area by a design load (live plus dead) to get a total load in pounds. Sizing joists, beams, and their spans to safely carry that load is a separate structural calculation that depends on species, grade, spacing, and span, and should be confirmed by an engineer or span table.
