How this calculator works
Glass weight comes down to three things: how big the pane is, how thick it is, and how dense the glass itself is. Once you know the area in square feet, convert it to square inches, multiply by the thickness in inches to get volume, then multiply by the glass’s density to get weight in pounds.
This calculator uses the standard density for soda-lime glass, the type used in most residential and commercial glazing, railings, and tabletops.
Formula: Weight = area (sq ft) × 144 (sq in per sq ft) × thickness (in) × glass density (0.0903 lb per cubic inch for standard soda-lime glass).
Worked example
A 20 sq ft pane, 1/4-inch thick (0.25 in):
- Weight = 20 × 144 × 0.25 × 0.0903
- 20 × 144 = 2,880
- 2,880 × 0.25 = 720
- 720 × 0.0903 ≈ 65.02 lb total, ≈ 3.25 psf
Notes
Tempered and laminated glass use the same base glass density as annealed glass, so this formula applies to any of them. The weight difference between glass types comes from thickness and any interlayers — laminated glass adds a thin plastic layer — not from the glass itself.
A common structural glass railing pane runs 1/2 inch or thicker and gets noticeably heavier. A 1/2-inch pane at 20 sq ft weighs roughly double the 1/4-inch example above.

Why does thickness matter so much to total weight?

How much heavier is a 1/2-inch pane than a 1/4-inch pane of the same size?

Since weight scales directly with thickness for the same pane area and glass type, doubling the thickness from 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch roughly doubles the total weight, all else being equal. This makes thicker structural glass noticeably harder to handle, mount, and support than standard window glass.
