How this calculator works
Velocity tells you how fast the water is actually moving inside the pipe. It comes from the flow and the open area. First the flow in gallons per minute is converted into cubic feet per second by dividing by 448.831. Then that is divided by the pipe’s inside cross-section area in square feet to give the velocity in feet per second.
The cross-section area comes from the inside diameter, which the calculator works out for you. Because area shrinks with the square of the diameter, the same flow forced through a narrower pipe moves much faster.
Formula: Velocity (ft/s) = (GPM ÷ 448.831) ÷ pipe cross-section area (sq ft). Area = π × (diameter ÷ 2 ÷ 12)².
Worked example
A flow of 50 GPM through a 2-inch pipe:
- Flow: 50 GPM
- Cross-section area ≈ 0.0218 sq ft
- Velocity ≈ 5.11 ft/s
Notes
For the same flow, a narrower pipe means faster water. All the gallons still have to get through, so a smaller opening forces the water to speed up to keep pace. Widening the pipe slows the same flow down.
Plumbers keep supply velocity under about 8 ft/s. Faster water is noisier, wears the pipe wall, and loses more pressure along the run, so a high calculated velocity is usually a sign to move up to a larger diameter.

Why does a narrower pipe give faster water?
For a fixed flow, all the water still has to get through, so if the opening is smaller it has to move faster to keep up. Velocity is flow divided by area, and a narrower pipe has less area. Because area shrinks with the square of the diameter, dropping to a smaller pipe raises the velocity sharply for the same gallons per minute.
What velocity is too high for a water line?
Plumbers generally keep supply-line velocity under about 8 feet per second. Above that, the water gets noisy, wears the inside of the pipe faster, and loses more pressure along the run. If your calculated velocity comes out higher than that range, the usual fix is a larger inside diameter so the same flow travels through more open area at a slower, quieter speed.
What is the number 448.831 in the formula?
It converts between gallons per minute and cubic feet per second. There are 7.48052 gallons in a cubic foot and 60 seconds in a minute, and 7.48052 times 60 is 448.831. To turn a flow in gallons per minute into cubic feet per second you divide by that constant, and then dividing by the pipe area gives velocity in feet per second.
