How this calculator works
Commercial parking lots are paved and priced in tons just like driveways, but at a much larger scale. This calculator multiplies your lot’s length and width by the paving depth to get cubic feet, then applies asphalt’s standard density of 145 lbs per cubic foot directly to tons — no intermediate cubic-yard step, since asphalt plants sell strictly by weight.
Formula: Tons = (Length ft × Width ft × Depth ft) × 145 lbs/ft³ ÷ 2000.
Worked example
A 100 ft × 60 ft parking lot at a 3-inch depth over a compacted base:
- Depth in feet: 3 ÷ 12 = 0.25 ft
- Cubic feet: 100 × 60 × 0.25 = 1,500 ft³
- Tons: (1,500 × 145) ÷ 2000 = 108.75 tons
- At $110/ton, that’s $11,962.50 before waste.

How to measure your lot
Measure the full paved footprint in feet, splitting the lot into rectangles for irregular shapes — a main parking field plus a separate drive aisle or loading dock apron, for instance — and add the tonnage from each section together. If your paving spec calls for a thicker section under drive lanes, run this calculator separately for that zone at its own depth.
