How this calculator works
Installed roofing cost is material plus labor, priced per square foot of roof surface. The calculator applies your rates to the roof area and splits the totals.
Formula: Total = roof area × material rate + roof area × labor rate.
Worked example
A 30 ft × 20 ft roof section (600 sq ft), $2/sq ft material, $3/sq ft labor:
- Area: 30 × 20 = 600 sq ft
- Material: 600 × $2 = $1,200
- Labor: 600 × $3 = $1,800
- Total installed: $3,000

Frequently asked questions
How much does a new roof cost?
Asphalt shingle re-roofs typically run $4–7 per square foot installed. Steeper pitches, multiple layers to tear off, and complex rooflines push it higher. The calculator defaults to $2 material and $3 labor per square foot; use local quotes.
Do I use roof area or footprint?
Use actual roof surface area, not the ground footprint — a pitched roof is larger. Find it with the Roof Area Calculator, which applies the pitch multiplier, then enter that here.
What does the estimate leave out?
Tear-off and disposal of the old roof, new underlayment, flashing, ridge vent, and any deck repair. Tear-off alone adds roughly $1–2 per square foot. Add these as separate lines when comparing bids.
Why is a steep roof more expensive?
Steep roofs are slower and less safe to work on, requiring staging and fall protection, and they use more material for waste. Labor rates climb noticeably above about 8/12 pitch.
