A standard refractory fire brick has a face of about 9 in x 4.5 in, or roughly 0.281 sq ft. This calculator divides the area you’re lining by that face size to get the brick count, rounding up to a whole brick.
Formula: Bricks = Lining area (sq ft) ÷ 0.281 sq ft per brick.
Worked example
A firebox lining 4 ft wide x 3 ft tall (12 sq ft):
- Area: 4 × 3 = 12 sq ft
- Bricks: 12 ÷ 0.281 ≈ 42.7046 → rounds up to 43 bricks
- At $4/brick, that’s $172.00 before waste.

How to measure your firebox or oven lining
Measure the interior surfaces you’re lining — back wall, side walls, and floor — treating each as a separate rectangle in feet, then add the areas together before entering the total. Because fireboxes and pizza ovens often need mitered or angled cuts at corners and flue openings, budget on the higher side of the waste range, and always pair fire brick with refractory (not standard) mortar rated for sustained high heat.

What's the difference between fire brick and a regular clay brick?
Fire brick is made from refractory clay fired at much higher temperatures, giving it far greater heat resistance and lower thermal conductivity than a standard building brick. Regular brick can crack, spall, or even become a fire hazard if used inside a firebox or kiln, so the two aren't interchangeable despite looking similar.
How much waste should I add for a fire brick lining?
10-15% is a reasonable range, on the higher end since firebox and kiln shapes often require angled cuts at corners and around openings like the flue or door, and refractory brick is denser and more prone to chipping when cut than standard brick.
Is fire brick only used for fireplaces?
No — fire brick lines any structure exposed to sustained high heat, including wood-fired pizza ovens, kilns, forges, and wood stove fireboxes, in addition to traditional masonry fireplaces. The same 9x4.5 in face size and calculation applies across most of these uses, though thickness (splits vs full bricks) can vary by application.
