How much do bricks weigh?
A brick weight calculator finds the total weight of a brick order by multiplying the number of bricks by the weight of one brick, then dividing by 2,000 to get US tons. With the default 4.5 lb modular clay brick, 1,000 bricks weigh 4,500 lb, which is 2.25 tons. The result helps you plan delivery, check a trailer’s rating, and know what a stack puts on the ground.
There is no volume math here. Bricks arrive as a count, so the only two inputs are how many you are buying and how heavy one brick is.
The formula
- Total pounds = number of bricks × weight per brick (lb).
- Total tons = total pounds ÷ 2,000.

Worked examples
Default order: 1,000 modular bricks at 4.5 lb
- Pounds: 1,000 × 4.5 = 4,500 lb
- Tons: 4,500 ÷ 2,000 = 2.25 tons
Veneer on a 200 sq ft wall
A single wythe of modular brick with ⅜ in joints uses about 6.76 bricks per sq ft.
- Count: 200 × 6.76 = 1,352 bricks
- Pounds: 1,352 × 4.5 = 6,084 lb
- Tons: 6,084 ÷ 2,000 = 3.04 tons
That is about 30 lb per square foot of finished wall from the brick alone, before mortar. It is one reason brick veneer needs a proper footing or steel lintels over openings.

Planning delivery and handling
Once you have the total, compare it with what will carry the bricks:
- Pickup trucks. Payload is printed on the sticker inside the driver’s door. Many half-ton pickups are rated somewhere between about 1,500 and 2,300 lb, so 1,000 bricks at 4,500 lb is two or three trips.
- Utility trailers. Check both the trailer’s gross rating and the hitch rating on the tow vehicle. The lower number wins.
- Supplier delivery. Boom or forklift trucks set full pallets where you choose, which saves moving 4,500 lb by hand.
- Hand moving. A mason’s tongs carries 8 to 10 bricks, about 36 to 45 lb. Moving 1,000 bricks that way is over 100 trips, so place the pallet close to the work.
How to get an accurate per-brick weight
- Read the manufacturer’s data sheet. Many list unit weight.
- Weigh ten bricks from the actual pallet on a bathroom scale and divide by ten. This averages out chipped and heavier units.
- Weigh them dry. Bricks stored in the rain absorb water and get heavier.
- For reclaimed bricks with old mortar stuck on, add a little to the weight of a clean brick.
Common mistakes
- Mixing up tons. This calculator uses US short tons of 2,000 lb. A metric tonne is about 2,205 lb. The pounds to tons calculator converts both.
- Forgetting the pallet and mortar. Wooden pallets and bagged mortar add more weight to the delivery.
- Stacking on a weak surface. A pallet of 500 bricks puts more than a ton on a few square feet. Avoid setting it on a thin patio, a deck, or soft lawn near a septic line.
- Skipping the structural check. Brick adds a lot of dead load. Use the dead load calculator for a rough figure, and have a licensed engineer or builder confirm footings and lintels for any new brick wall.

How much does a standard brick weigh?
A US modular clay brick (about 3⅝ × 2¼ × 7⅝ in) typically weighs around 4 to 4.5 lb, which is why the calculator defaults to 4.5 lb. Cored bricks with holes are lighter than solid ones, and dense firebrick is heavier. The most reliable number is the one on your supplier's spec sheet.
How do I find the total weight of my brick order?
