How this calculator works

Vinyl siding is sold by the box, and a box of common double-4 profile covers about 200 square feet (2 squares). The calculator divides your wall area by that coverage and rounds up to whole boxes.

Formula: Boxes = wall area (sq ft) ÷ 200 sq ft per box, rounded up.

Worked example

A wall section 40 ft long × 10 ft high (400 sq ft):

  • Boxes: 400 ÷ 200 = 2 boxes
  • At $180/box, that’s $360.00 before waste and accessories.

Coverage reference

Wall area Boxes (200 sq ft each)
400 sq ft 2 boxes
1,000 sq ft 5 boxes
2,000 sq ft 10 boxes

How to measure

Measure each wall’s length and height, add gable triangles, and subtract big openings. Add 10–15% for waste, and price accessories separately. For an installed budget including labor, use the Vinyl Siding Cost Calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How many boxes of vinyl siding do I need?

A box of standard double-4 vinyl siding covers about 2 squares, or 200 square feet of wall. Divide your total wall area by 200 and round up. The calculator does this and adds a waste allowance when you check the toggle.

How do I measure wall area for siding?

Multiply each wall's length by its height and add them together. Include gable triangles (½ × base × height), and subtract large openings like garage doors. Enter the total as length × height here, or run the calculator once per wall.

How much waste should I add?

10% is standard for a simple facade; add 15% for a house with many windows, corners, or gables, where more pieces get cut and discarded.

Does this include trim and accessories?

No — this counts the siding panels only. J-channel, corner posts, starter strip, and house wrap are separate. Budget another 10–20% of the panel cost for accessories on a typical job.
