Play sand is sold by weight but measured by volume, so this calculator converts your sandbox’s length, width, and fill depth into cubic yards, then multiplies by play sand’s typical density of 1.35 tons per cubic yard to get the tons you need to order.
Formula: Cubic yards = (Length ft × Width ft × Depth ft) ÷ 27. Tons = Cubic yards × 1.35.
Worked example
An 8 ft × 6 ft sandbox filled 12 inches deep:
- Depth in feet: 12 ÷ 12 = 1.0 ft
- Cubic yards: (8 × 6 × 1.0) ÷ 27 ≈ 1.7778 yd³
- Tons: 1.7778 × 1.35 ≈ 2.40 tons

How to measure your sandbox
Measure the inside length and width of the sandbox frame in feet, and decide your fill depth based on how the sandbox will be used — 12 inches gives room for digging, while 6-8 inches is enough for toddlers who mostly scoop and pour. For very small sandboxes, this calculator’s ton result may translate to a manageable number of 50-lb bags rather than a bulk delivery.

What makes play sand different from regular construction or paver sand?
Play sand is washed and screened specifically to remove silt, fine dust, and larger debris, and is typically sourced from materials tested for safety around children — free of the crystalline silica dust levels found in some construction-grade sands. It's finer and more uniform than paver sand, closer in feel to sand at a beach.
How deep should sand be in a sandbox?
12 inches is a generous, commonly recommended fill depth for a standard sandbox, giving kids enough material to dig, mound, and build with. Shallower sandboxes (6-8 inches) work for younger children who mostly scoop and pour rather than dig deep holes.
Why isn't waste calculated for play sand?
Play sand is measured and filled to a specific box volume rather than spread over an open, irregular area like a driveway or path, so there's little dimensional waste from overspill or uneven spreading — you're filling a defined container, not covering unpredictable ground.
Can I buy play sand in bags instead of by the ton?
Yes — play sand is commonly sold in 50-lb bags, and since a ton is 2,000 lbs, that works out to roughly 40 bags per ton. For a small sandbox needing well under a ton, bags from a hardware or big-box store are often more practical than ordering bulk delivery.
Does play sand need a liner or barrier under it?
A permeable weed-barrier fabric under the sand is common practice — it lets rainwater drain through while keeping the sand from mixing into the soil beneath it and keeping weeds or grass from growing up into the sandbox.
How often does sandbox sand need to be topped off or replaced?
Sand slowly compacts, gets scattered by play, and can pick up debris over time, so most sandboxes need a top-off every year or two, with a full replacement recommended every few years or sooner if the sand becomes contaminated or heavily compacted.
