How this calculator works
Conductors need room inside a conduit, both to physically fit and to pull through without damage. Code sets that room as a percentage of the conduit’s internal area rather than a fixed number, so the right conduit size depends on how many conductors you’re running and how thick each one is.
This calculator takes your conductor count and the cross-sectional area of a single conductor, works out the minimum internal area required, and matches that to the smallest standard EMT trade size that satisfies it.
Formula: Required conduit area = (conductor count × single conductor area) ÷ 0.40 (the NEC limits fill to 40% of a conduit’s internal area for three or more conductors). The calculator matches this to the smallest standard EMT trade size that fits.

6 conductors of 12 AWG THHN, each 0.0133 in²:

Always round up to the next standard trade size, never down, since rounding down would push the fill percentage past the 40% limit the calculation is based on.

What is the NEC 40% fill rule?
For three or more conductors in a raceway, the National Electrical Code limits the total cross-sectional area of the conductors to 40% of the conduit's internal area. This leaves room for heat dissipation and makes it physically possible to pull the wires through. This calculator uses that 40% limit to work out the smallest conduit that legally fits your conductors.
How does this calculator differ from a conduit fill calculator?
A conduit fill calculator checks whether a conduit size you've already chosen passes the 40% fill rule for your conductor count. This calculator works the other direction: it starts from your conductor count and wire gauge, and recommends the smallest standard trade size that already satisfies the rule, so you don't have to check sizes one by one.
Why does the calculator round up to a standard trade size?
Conduit is manufactured in fixed trade sizes, such as 1/2 inch or 3/4 inch, not custom sizes. Once the required area is calculated, the result almost never lands exactly on a standard size, so the calculator always rounds up to the next size that fits. Rounding down would put the fill over the legal 40% limit.
Does conductor insulation type affect the sizing?
Yes. Different insulation types, such as THHN versus THWN, have different cross-sectional areas even at the same wire gauge, because the insulation thickness differs. Always use the conductor area for the specific type and gauge you're actually installing, since a different area changes which conduit size the 40% rule allows.
