How this calculator works

The National Electrical Code sets a minimum cubic-inch box volume based on how many conductors (and conductor-equivalents) will be packed inside, so the box doesn’t get overcrowded. Each wire gauge is assigned its own per-conductor cubic-inch allowance, and thicker wire is given more room.

Formula: Minimum box volume = number of conductor-equivalents × cubic-inch allowance per conductor for that wire gauge (14 AWG = 2.0 in³, 12 AWG = 2.25 in³, 10 AWG = 2.5 in³, 8 AWG = 3.0 in³, 6 AWG = 5.0 in³).

6 conductor-equivalents of 12 AWG wire:

NEC box fill rules count more than just the wires entering the box. Each device such as a switch or outlet typically counts as 2 conductor-equivalents, each ground wire (regardless of how many are present) counts as just 1 total, and internal clamps count as 1. This calculator’s “conductor-equivalent count” input should already reflect that full total, not just the raw number of wires entering the box.

What counts as a conductor-equivalent in box fill?

It's more than just the wires physically entering the box. Each device such as a switch or outlet typically counts as 2 conductor-equivalents, all the ground wires together count as just 1 total (no matter how many there are), and internal clamps count as 1. Add all of these to the raw conductor count to get the total conductor-equivalent count.

Why does wire gauge change the required box volume?

The NEC allows a set cubic-inch volume per conductor for each wire gauge, and that allowance gets larger as the wire gets thicker. A box full of 12 AWG conductors needs more volume than the same count of 14 AWG conductors, because each 12 AWG conductor is allotted more space.

What happens if a box is under-filled versus over-filled?

A box that's too small for its conductor count is a code violation and a safety issue — overcrowded wires generate more heat and are harder to work with safely. A box that's larger than the minimum required volume is fine; it simply has room to spare.
