How this calculator works
This defaults to a concrete driveway estimate — material cost (cubic yards from the standard slab-volume formula, times your price per cubic yard) plus labor (your driveway’s area times a per-square-foot rate). Formula: Cubic yards = (Length ft × Width ft × Depth ft) ÷ 27. Total cost = (Cubic yards × Price/yd³) + (Area sq ft × Labor rate/sq ft).
Worked example
A 40 ft × 12 ft (480 sq ft) concrete driveway at 4 inches, $150/yd³ material, $6/sq ft labor:
- Depth in feet: 4 ÷ 12 = 0.3333 ft
- Cubic yards: (40 × 12 × 0.3333) ÷ 27 ≈ 5.9259 → 5.93 yd³
- Material cost: 5.9259 × $150 ≈ $888.89
- Labor cost: 480 × $6 = $2,880.00
- Total estimated cost: $3,768.89

Yes — asphalt tends to hold up better in extreme cold since it flexes rather than cracks with freeze-thaw cycles, while concrete can be more prone to surface scaling from de-icing salts in northern climates.
